AMTRAK Service Yard and Three Railroad Bridges. Downtown Chicago.

AMTRAK Chicago Yard

This is part of the AMTRAK Service and Inspection Yard and Car Shop, which is south of Chicago Union Station. Prominent in the left center are two bridges: the St. Charles Air Line Bridge and the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal (B&OCT) Bridge, shown here before it was raised and locked in position, with its enormous counterweights. These are bascule bridges. Just right of center in the background is part of the vertical-lift railroad bridge that accommodates AMTRAK trains over the South Branch of the Chicago River. This is part of the Canal Street Railroad Bridge, or Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge, #458.
